At least 22 Palestinians have been killed in a series of Israeli air strikes across northern and central Gaza, Hamas medical and civil defense officials have reported.
The strikes targeted five locations, including residential homes, with local sources confirming that a senior Hamas commander was among those dead.
The Israeli military stated that the strikes were a response to an incident earlier on Saturday when an armed terrorist fired at soldiers after crossing into areas under their control, a claim disputed by Hamas.
Since the ceasefire took effect six weeks ago, both factions have accused each other of violations, raising concerns about renewed conflict.
Gaza's health ministry noted that over 310 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire began. The recent strikes targeted Gaza City in the north and locations in central Gaza, including Deir al-Balah and Nuseirat camp.
Witnesses reported that one of the strikes set a vehicle ablaze at the crowded Abbas junction in Gaza City, killing five people. Additionally, three individuals died near a mosque in Deir al-Balah, and at least six more were killed in multiple strikes on residential homes.
The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized Saturday's actions as a necessary response to Hamas's alleged aggressions, pointing to demands for Hamas to uphold its end of the ceasefire agreement.
Hamas condemned the Israeli military’s actions as blatant violations of the ceasefire and urged international mediators and the U.S. to act swiftly to avert further escalation.
Following the devastating October 7 attacks led by Hamas that resulted in significant casualties on both sides, including Israeli civilians, the situation remains extremely tense, with ongoing fears of further violence in the region.
