At least 25 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the Hamas-run health ministry has reported, marking one of the deadliest days since a ceasefire was established five weeks ago. Among the deceased, ten were killed when a building associated with the ministry of religious endowments in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood was targeted, according to rescuers.
The Israeli military stated it acted against 'Hamas terrorist targets' following gunfire directed at its soldiers in Khan Younis, which was claimed to breach the ceasefire agreement. Hamas reacted critically, warning that such strikes pose a serious threat to the fragile ceasefire.
This uptick in violence comes shortly after the UN Security Council's resolution to support U.S. President Donald Trump's peace plan, which has stirred yet more discord in the area. Reports from the Civil Defence agency in Gaza confirm multiple strike locations in Gaza City and Khan Younis, leading to extensive damages and civilian casualties, including an alarming number of children.
The ongoing conflict traces back to escalations beginning October 7, 2023, when a Hamas-led assault resulted in significant losses in Israel, prompting an Israeli military offensive that has claimed over 69,500 Palestinian lives since then, with the health ministry indicating even casualties during the ceasefire.
Hamas maintains that its actions are part of a legitimate resistance against Israeli occupation, while Israel asserts that its operations are necessary for national security and the disarmament of militants.
