In brief
The Greek authorities have intensified emergency measures on Santorini and nearby islands in response to an alarming frequency of earthquakes. Over 200 tremors have been recorded in just 48 hours, prompting school closures and deployment of emergency services. The seismic activity, which continues to the present, has residents experiencing tremors at intervals of just a few minutes.
Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos indicated that the earthquakes, which have increased in magnitude, are part of an "intense pre-seismic sequence." Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, currently participating in an EU leaders meeting in Brussels, urged calm and adherence to civil protection directives among locals. Most of the recorded tremors have been of minor magnitude, although several have surpassed readings of 4.5. The seismologist noted specific events of magnitudes 4.7 and 4.9. Fortunately, no serious injuries or substantial damage has been reported, with only minor landslides noted by authorities. While Greece is accustomed to earthquakes due to its numerous fault lines, such sustained tremors increasing in strength is a rarity for the region.
