On a tragic Monday afternoon, a highway crash in Georgia between a semitrailer and a van claimed eight lives, including seven discovered on-site and one found later. The accident on Interstate 85 caused by the semitrailer following too closely, led to a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles and left several cats in distress due to the van's involvement with a rescue group.

ATLANTA (AP) — An eighth body was discovered at the crash site of a fiery incident involving a semitrailer and a van in Georgia, as confirmed by Deputy Jackson County Coroner Dean Stringer on Tuesday.

The tragic accident occurred on Monday afternoon when a semitrailer failed to maintain a safe distance and struck a Dodge van on Interstate 85, northeast of Atlanta. The impact ignited the van, leading to extensive damage and loss of lives.

Initially, seven individuals were reported dead at the scene, but as the investigation unfolded, the eighth victim was later discovered among the wreckage. A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Public Safety stated, “Troopers are still trying to identify and confirm the occupants.”

Four additional vehicles were involved in what officials described as a severe “chain reaction” accident. Among the impacted vehicles was a van from Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters. The driver of the animal rescue van sustained minor injuries. The organization, which was transporting 37 cats to a shelter in Vermont, reported that in the chaos of the crash, several cages were destroyed and some cats were able to escape; two cats remain missing while one was hospitalized in critical condition.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released, as investigations by Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the event.
