A substantial global outage has impacted millions of users of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, leading to difficulties in accessing these popular platforms. According to Meta, the parent company of these apps, "We're aware that a technical issue is impacting some users' ability to access our apps. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” they posted on X.
Outage-tracking site Downdetector reported over 22,000 incidents for Facebook and over 18,000 for WhatsApp this evening. Users across the UK, parts of Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and the US began experiencing problems around 1800 GMT on Wednesday, highlighting the extensive reach of the disruption.
The reported issues span various types of malfunctions, from users being entirely unable to log in to specific problems like feeds not refreshing. Given that Meta's platforms boast over three billion active monthly users, the scale of the outage is significant, affecting individual experiences worldwide.
Meta’s most notable outage occurred in 2021 when founder Mark Zuckerberg issued an apology for the nearly six-hour disruption that affected Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram services, raising concerns about the reliability of these platforms. As users await a resolution, the impact of this latest glitch continues to resonate across multiple regions.
