In brief

Ricardo Prada Vásquez was taken by U.S. authorities, but his fate remains unknown, sparking fears about immigrant rights in America.

In January, Ricardo Prada Vásquez, a Venezuelan delivery worker based in Detroit, faced a dire situation after accidentally crossing into Canada via the Ambassador Bridge. What seemed like a mere blunder would lead him to detention and subsequent deportation. The 32-year-old found himself in U.S. custody for attempting to re-enter the country on a confusing day, and he was later placed in a detention facility. On March 15, he communicated with a friend in Chicago, indicating that he and other Venezuelan detainees were scheduled for repatriation to Venezuela. Instead, U.S. authorities sent them on a flight to El Salvador, leading to their detention in a high-security prison, cut off from any external communication. However, what has become alarming is that Prada is missing from the reported list of deported individuals; he does not appear in any records or images shared by authorities.According to Javier, his friend who last spoke with him, "He has simply disappeared." The uncertainty surrounding Prada's whereabouts raises troubling questions about the transparency and rights of immigrants facing deportation in the U.S. Javier, who refrained from sharing his last name due to concerns about potential repercussions, underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the fear experienced by those seeking asylum or a better life in the U.S.
