The Argentine human rights activist Rosa Roisinblit has died at the age of 106, her organization announced.
She was the honorary president and a founding member of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, a group that sought to locate children who were stolen during Argentina's military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983.
We only have words of gratitude for her dedication... and the love with which she searched for the grandsons and granddaughters until the very end, the organization stated.
Approximately 30,000 people were killed or forcibly disappeared during Argentina's "Dirty War," with children of detained activists often taken and given up for adoption.
Born in 1919 in Moises Ville, a community of Jewish immigrants, Roisinblit later moved to Buenos Aires where she became an obstetrician and married in 1951.
Her daughter Patricia, along with her son-in-law José Pérez Rojo and 15-month-old granddaughter Mariana, were abducted in 1978 when they were left-wing activists.
Patricia was able to give birth to a son in captivity before she and her family vanished, while Mariana was eventually returned to Rosa, who raised her.
After her family's abduction, Roisinblit joined the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo. She served as treasurer for six years and vice-president until 2022.
The efforts of Roisinblit and others helped reunite an estimated 140 missing children with their biological families, although hundreds remain unaccounted for.
Roisinblit’s grandson, Guillermo, was found in 2000, and their reunion after years apart marked a pivotal moment in her life. Roisinblit was actively present during legal proceedings against those responsible for the abductions of her family members.
In her later years, Roisinblit continued to advocate for human rights, asserting, This wound never heals... But to say I'm stopping? No, I'll never stop.
She is survived by granddaughter Mariana Eva Perez, a notable writer and academic, and Guillermo, now a human rights lawyer, who continues her legacy. In a heartfelt tribute following her passing, Guillermo expressed comfort in knowing she is reunited with her late family members.
