In brief

A train carrying over 400 passengers was hijacked by the Baloch Liberation Army in Pakistan, leading to a tense standoff with security forces and a rescue operation underway to save hostages.

Pakistani security forces are embroiled in a tense hostage crisis following the seizure of a passenger train by Baloch separatists on March 11, 2025. The Baloch Liberation Army (B.L.A.), a banned militant organization, took control of the train carrying more than 400 individuals in a remote part of Balochistan Province, intensifying a long-standing insurgency in the region. The B.L.A. claims to be holding at least 214 hostages, including military personnel and police officers, demanding the release of their imprisoned members within a strict 48-hour deadline. They have issued threats, stating that failure to comply would result in the execution of hostages. As of Wednesday morning, security officials reported that more than 150 individuals had been rescued in an ongoing operation. However, the whereabouts of many remaining hostages are still unknown. Meanwhile, reports indicate that at least 27 militants have been killed during the clashes, with hostages being held at three distinct locations among the mountains.Muhammad Tallal Chaudry, the state's interior minister, confirmed to media that some hostages had been taken into the mountainous terrain nearby, further complicating efforts for a swift resolution. The crisis underscores the challenges faced by Pakistani authorities in dealing with entrenched separatist movements in the area.
