In brief
Rajab Butt's case highlights the growing need for awareness regarding wildlife ownership and animal welfare in Pakistan.
In a notable case reflecting issues surrounding wildlife ownership in Pakistan, YouTube star Rajab Butt has been mandated to create 12 educational videos on animal welfare as a consequence of his illegal ownership of a lion cub. The popular content creator, who boasts a following of 5.6 million subscribers, received the cub as a wedding gift last month from another YouTuber, Umar Dolla, who operates the channel Lion Hub. Following the viral nature of the footage shared by Butt, authorities took action, moving the cub to Lahore Safari Zoo and giving it the name Bhatti. The ruling by the court stipulates that Butt must produce a series of five-minute videos monthly for the next year, intended to educate his audience about the appropriate treatment of wild animals. Acknowledging his misstep, Mr. Butt expressed regret over accepting the cub, stating, "Keeping wild animals in such circumstances is inappropriate." He further committed to use his platform to promote positive content, emphasizing the importance of respecting animal rights. The incident came to light when a wildlife officer reported Butt's activities to the police after viewing his video featuring the lion cub. Interestingly, Dolla attempted to assert ongoing ownership of the cub during legal proceedings. However, the judge ruled in favor of Butt, noting that the cub had been improperly acquired.Tariq Janjua, the director of Lahore Safari Zoo, commented on the situation, asserting that lions cannot be domesticated and that their ownership poses risks to both the creatures and the community. This case serves as a significant reminder of the crucial need for awareness regarding wildlife ownership laws and the ethical treatment of animals in Pakistan.
