Toni Mannion, a devastated mother from Birmingham, expressed her heartbreak after a planned Make-A-Wish trip to Disneyland Paris for her terminally ill daughter, five-year-old Daisy, was abruptly cancelled. The trip was set to create joyful memories, but disruptions in Eurostar services caused by the discovery of an unexploded World War Two bomb near the Gare du Nord station led to the cancellation.
Ms. Mannion, 38, articulated her disappointment, stating, "I was really looking forward to making some special memories." Unfortunately, alternative transport was not feasible due to Daisy’s complex health conditions, which include a rare metabolic disorder known as Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH). Daisy requires a wheelchair for mobility and is non-verbal with severe epilepsy.
On Thursday, the Mannion family had traveled from Birmingham to London, accompanied by Daisy's one-year-old sister, Lara, Toni's mother, and a friend. Despite the disappointment, Ms. Mannion remains hopeful that the Make-A-Wish charity will help to reschedule the trip. "We've been planning this for such a long time, and it's gutting," she mourned, sharing her emotional turmoil, "We just never know how long we've got left with her."
The bomb, which was safely defused on Friday afternoon, caused significant disruption to train services, with Eurostar’s chief safety officer Simon Lejeune offering his apologies for the inconvenience caused. With services expected to return to normal on Saturday, many UK travelers found themselves stranded.
Others, like Vicky and her mother Jo, decided to make the best of their situation, opting to extend their stay in Paris. Initially only planning for a night, Vicky said, "We were starting to get a bit worried about being able to get home eventually," but managed to book a train for Sunday and enjoyed exploring the city.
Meanwhile, numerous travelers faced challenges accessing the Eurostar app, including Bob and Mavis from Nottingham, who struggled for hours before finally securing a train to Paris, leading to unexpected overnight expenses in London. The chaotic situation has left lasting impacts on travelers and families, especially those like the Mannion family, who were hoping to create cherished memories.
