In brief

Kangala Wildlife Rescue undertook extensive efforts to locate Valerie after she disappeared during a camping trip.

A miniature dachshund named Valerie has astonished rescuers with her survival after going missing for a staggering 529 days in the Australian wilderness. The dog was last seen by her owners, Georgia Gardner and Joshua Fishlock, during a camping trip in November 2022 when they left her in a playpen to go fishing. Upon returning, she had vanished. The dedicated team at Kangala Wildlife Rescue worked tirelessly, with volunteers contributing over 1,000 hours to the search and scouring more than 5,000 kilometers (about 3,109 miles) of terrain in their quest to find her. To aid the rescue, the team created a "scent trail" using Ms. Gardner's t-shirt leading to a trap. After weeks of relentless efforts, the organization joyously announced Valerie's rescue in a social media post.According to reports, various campers had spotted Valerie underneath cars during her absence, but she would flee back into the bush when approached. Outstandingly, sightings of her pink collar surfaced months after she disappeared, rekindling hopes of her survival. Kangala director Lisa Karran, who physically approached Valerie wearing remnants of Ms. Gardner's clothing to establish familiarity, played a key role in calming the pup once captured. After waiting for the right moment to ensure Valerie was securely in the trap, the rescue concluded successfully; a testament to patience and perseverance.Following her heartwarming return, Ms. Gardner expressed gratitude and encouragement to others facing similar circumstances, asserting, "your feelings are valid and never give up hope." This miraculous recovery underscores the strength of the bond between pets and their owners, as well as the commitment of rescue organizations to reunite them against all odds.
