In brief

The retrial, stemming from overturned convictions, sees Weinstein maintaining his innocence while prosecutors present a strong case against him.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys for Harvey Weinstein kicked off his retrial in New York on Wednesday, reigniting a case that has captured international attention since the #MeToo movement began. Weinstein, previously convicted of sex crimes, faces new allegations from multiple women, including a former television production assistant and a model. Assistant District Attorney Shannon Lucey argued that Weinstein abused his Hollywood power, stating, “The defendant wanted their bodies, and the more they resisted, the more forceful he got.” In his defense, attorney Arthur Aidala contended that the prosecution's narrative would fail to hold up, asserting, “They're going to ask you to make sense of things that just don't make sense.” Weinstein, who has pleaded not guilty, previously had a conviction overturned by an appeals court citing unfair trial conditions. He is currently serving a 16-year sentence from another trial in California, further complicating his legal battles. The new trial features a jury of 12 individuals – seven women and five men – tasked with determining Weinstein's guilt or innocence. Notably, the retrial will revisit testimonies from Jessica Mann and Miriam Haley, witnesses from his past trial. Additionally, it introduces a new unnamed victim who claims Weinstein assaulted her in a Manhattan hotel back in 2006.Weinstein, 73, grapples with various health issues, including cancer, and has had recent heart surgery. Due to concerns regarding his health and treatment conditions, a judge granted his attorneys' request to permit him to stay at Bellevue hospital when not in court. Currently, Weinstein faces over 100 accusations of sexual misconduct and is predicted to spend the remainder of his life incarcerated. The widespread acknowledgement of these allegations has become pivotal to the ongoing fight against sexual abuse in Hollywood. Born into a family that shaped Hollywood, Weinstein co-founded Miramax and produced several iconic films, garnering over 300 Oscar nominations throughout his controversial career. His legacy, now marred by serious allegations, serves as a sobering reminder of the pervasive issues of power abuse and sexual misconduct within the entertainment industry.
