In brief

In a surprising move, the Palestinian Authority announced it would lift a ban on Al Jazeera, enabling the broadcaster to resume operations in the West Bank after months of scrutiny.

The Palestinian Authority stated late Monday that it would end the ban on Al Jazeera, which had been in place since January. The decision followed accusations that the network was “inciting sedition” and meddling in Palestinian affairs. While the reason for the original ban remains vague, it had been sanctioned by Attorney General Akram Khatib, who indicated the ban would not be lifted until Al Jazeera “corrected its legal status.” Khatib confirmed that a court order to officially revoke the ban would be issued shortly. However, he refrained from elaborating on any changes that may have led to this decision. For years, the Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, has maintained a tense relationship with the Qatari-funded outlet. Officials from the ruling Fatah party have frequently accused Al Jazeera of favoring Hamas, a political rival that ousted Fatah from Gaza in 2007. The ban on Al Jazeera coincided with a significant military operation conducted by the Palestinian Authority in Jenin, a stronghold for various militant groups. Palestinian activists, along with human rights organizations, have criticized President Mahmoud Abbas’s government for its authoritarian tactics against dissenters, particularly highlighting the attempt to suppress free media voices. Al Jazeera, in response to the ban, expressed that the Palestinian Authority was "trying to hide the truth of events in the occupied territories." Interestingly, this is not an isolated incident; Israel had previously banned Al Jazeera, shutting down its operations within the country last May and conducting military raids on its offices in Ramallah. The tension between Al Jazeera and Israeli authorities intensified during the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas when the broadcaster reported extensively from Gaza, often highlighting the dire conditions faced by civilians. Al Jazeera has refuted Israeli claims suggesting that it supports Hamas or that its journalists are aligned with militant factions. Walid al-Omari, Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Ramallah, confirmed that while the network's offices would not be reopening immediately due to Israeli restrictions, journalists could operate freely in the West Bank, no longer facing the threat of prosecution from the Palestinian Authority.
