In brief
The ongoing civil war in Sudan has resulted in a severe food crisis, causing the tragic deaths of thirteen children from malnutrition in a displacement camp. Medics urge the international community to provide urgent assistance as conditions worsen.
In a heartbreaking development, thirteen children lost their lives last month due to a severe food shortage at a displacement camp in East Darfur, Sudan, as reported by medics from the Sudan Doctors Network. This camp, located in the city of el-Daein, is home to around 7,000 individuals who have been subjected to continuous violence from armed groups. The ongoing civil war, entering its third year, has devastated humanitarian efforts, leading to widespread malnutrition and increasing famine. The humanitarian crisis began to escalate significantly last year when famine conditions were first identified in parts of Darfur, which have since spread to other regions, further exacerbating the dire situation. On Tuesday, the Sudan Doctors Network made a desperate plea to the international community, urging immediate action to deliver food and essential healthcare to the distraught residents of Lagawa camp, particularly vulnerable children and pregnant women.El-Daein serves as the capital of East Darfur, an area completely under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which continues to clash with the Sudanese army. The ongoing conflict has led to a collapse of social services, economic structures, and humanitarian networks, leaving many in the region wrestling with food insecurity and related crises. In addition to the hunger crisis, aid organizations have issued warnings about a cholera outbreak looming over Darfur, with the United Nations indicating a significant rise in reported cases in the city of Tawila. The combined effects of deteriorating water and sanitation infrastructure, along with low vaccination rates, have left the region vulnerable to such outbreaks.Sudan plunged into war in April 2023 following escalating tensions between the army and the RSF, two entities that once collaborated to seize power through a coup. Their fallout over a plan to transition to civilian governance ignited widespread violence, contributing to one of the worst humanitarian disasters globally. The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of civilian casualties and displaced over 12 million people, with nearly a million now facing famine conditions.
