In brief

Air India faces scrutiny as flight returns to origin after multiple toilets are clogged by passengers' misuse.

Air India had to return a flight from Chicago to Delhi last week after finding that multiple toilets were rendered unusable due to passengers flushing plastic bags, rags, and clothing down the lavatories. The incident occurred on March 5 during Flight 126, just two hours into its journey when the crew reported that eight of the twelve toilets were “unserviceable,” resulting in considerable discomfort for the nearly 342 passengers onboard. As the plane was already over the Atlantic Ocean, the crew decided to turn back to Chicago due to safety concerns and limited options for landing in European airports at night. A flight tracking website indicated that the aircraft had spent a total of about 10 hours in the air before returning, reaching a point near Greenland when the decision to turn back was made. Upon inspection, Air India discovered that the toilets had been clogged with polythene bags, rags, and clothing, leading to an emergency response. The airline released images showing the drainage system heavily obstructed with waste materials. All passengers disembarked safely in Chicago and were offered accommodation and alternate flight arrangements. Experts noted that while toilet blockages are not unusual, the complete failure of multiple toilets leading to an emergency is rare and typically suggests a misuse of the facilities. Air India reiterated the importance of using airplanes' lavatories correctly, as it has previously encountered similar issues with other inappropriate items found in the toilets. This incident has sparked a debate on social media regarding airplane toilet etiquette, with some users criticizing Air India's management for maintenance issues, while others defended the airline, emphasizing the passengers' responsibility to follow proper usage guidelines. Air India concluded its statement by urging compliance with sanitary practices on flights to avoid any future occurrences.
