In brief

Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi’s official meeting marks a crucial thaw in Sino-Indian ties following a border settlement.

In a significant development at the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in person for their first official engagement in over five years. This meeting comes just two days after the two nations reached a landmark agreement on Himalayan border patrols, a region that has been a flashpoint since a deadly clash in 2020. Their encounter is seen as a pivotal moment amid growing tensions and geopolitical shifts in the region, exemplified by India's increasing alignment with the United States through regional groups like the Quad. The BRICS summit, which features emerging economies, provides a platform for these leaders to address pressing global issues. The 16th annual gathering welcomed an expanded membership this year, now including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, thereby amplifying its representation of nearly half the world's population. BRICS aims to challenge Western dominance and positions itself as an advocate for developing countries. However, fostering a unified stance has been a challenge due to the divergent interests of its leading members, particularly regarding their relations with the West.During discussions, leaders exchanged viewpoints on establishing financial mechanisms that operate independent of the U.S. dollar. President Putin proposed initiating a BRICS grain exchange, which, given Russia's status as a major wheat exporter, could evolve into a broader commodities exchange in response to rising global prices. This proposal highlights BRICS' ambition to enhance its economic influence on the global stage while addressing the needs of its diverse member nations.
