Giovanny Aldama Garcia, arrested for allegedly abandoning his dog in the face of Hurricane Milton, faces aggravated animal cruelty charges.
A Florida man, Giovanny Aldama Garcia, has been arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty after allegedly abandoning his dog, Jumbo, tied to a post amidst the floodwaters of Hurricane Milton. The incident came to light when Florida Highway Patrol officers rescued Jumbo near a highway on October 9, with bodycam footage showing the animal standing in chest-deep water. The video has since garnered over 12 million views. Garcia, who fled Florida due to the impending storm, reportedly admitted to abandoning the dog because he could not find alternative care. He later surrendered ownership after attempting to retrieve the dog from the animal shelter, where Jumbo, renamed Trooper in honor of his rescuer, awaits adoption. If convicted, Garcia could face up to five years in prison. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis condemned the act as "totally unacceptable," highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership during emergencies. The Leon County Humane Society, currently caring for Trooper, reported an overwhelming interest in his adoption. Hurricane Milton, which struck Florida as a Category 3 storm, left 24 people dead and numerous areas flooded, prompting widespread rescues.
