In brief

As Russia commemorates the 80th anniversary of its triumph over Nazi Germany, the presence of foreign dignitaries and military displays underscores the Kremlin's narrative amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

President Vladimir V. Putin is set to lead a grand Victory Day parade in Moscow's Red Square this Friday, commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany 80 years ago. The parade serves as a platform for Russia to showcase its past military glories while justifying its ongoing war in Ukraine. Joining Putin will be leaders from China, Brazil, and over 20 other nations, highlighting Russia's outreach to the "global south" as a counterbalance to Western influence. The parade is expected to feature a vast array of military displays, including thousands of soldiers, armored vehicles, tanks, and nuclear missile launchers. This year will also witness the presence of a Chinese military regiment marching in Red Square, accompanied by fighter jets flying overhead. The significance of this year's parade is heightened by the fact that it will be the largest since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine commenced in 2022. The Kremlin aims to draw attention to the participation of foreign dignitaries, scrutinizing their attendance as indicators of support or resistance against the West. Recently, Putin announced a three-day unilateral cease-fire from May 8 to coincide with the festivities. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the cease-fire as mere "theatrical" and proposed a 30-day truce to facilitate real negotiations to end the ongoing conflict. Zelensky has also stated that Ukraine would not provide security guarantees to attendees of the parade in Moscow. The somber backdrop of the war, compounded by a recent missile strike in Kyiv that resulted in significant casualties, juxtaposes the celebratory atmosphere of the parade, reflecting the stark realities both nations face.
