In brief

South Korean stocks advanced sharply on Wednesday, supported by gains in technology shares and strong U.S. tech indices. The KOSPI climbed 2.43% to 5,786.13, while the KOSDAQ added 11.35 points to 715.74. Leading companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix posted double‑digit gains, reflecting investor optimism ahead of U.S. midterm voting.

In Seoul, South Korean stocks opened sharply higher on Wednesday, November 3, 2026, as investors rushed to buy technology shares in anticipation of outcomes from the United States midterm election.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 137.34 points, or 2.43 percent, to 5,786.13 as the market bell rang at 9:00 a.m. local time. The KOSDAQ, which tracks smaller‑cap and technology-oriented companies, climbed 11.35 points to 715.74, echoing the optimism that tech firms would lead the country’s recovery.

Across the world, U.S. technology indices also gained. The Nasdaq, heavy in chip makers, added 0.83 percent based on robust gains from semiconductor stocks. The S&P 500 increased 0.36 percent, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 2.63 percent.

Key South Korean players in the tech sector reported notable gains. Samsung Electronics surged 1.94 percent, driven by higher margin expectations for its semiconductor division. SK hynix, South Korea’s largest memory chipmaker, climbed 3.86 percent as analysts welcomed a competitive stance in global memory markets. Hanmi Semiconductor and Samsung Electro‑Mechanics, both manufacturers of chip equipment and electronic components, rose 4.89 percent and 3.17 percent respectively.

Other firms in technology and related sectors also benefitted. Game publisher NC Inc. increased 2.92 percent, reflecting confidence in global gaming revenues. Major shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries added 1.39 percent as investors anticipated stronger export demand.

The South Korean won weakened slightly, trading at 1,345.5 won per U.S. dollar at 9:15 a.m., down one won from the close of the previous session. The slight depreciation of the won mirrors the global trend of analysts pointing to U.S. policy uncertainty and the anticipation of midterm results that could shape President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Investment bankers at major Korean firms cited a combination of support for the semiconductor industry and a broader rally in technology stocks as catalysts for the day’s gains. The rally was also supported by expectations that a more favorable U.S. outcome could aid a global upgrade cycle for ICT sector companies.

Meanwhile, the Korean exchange’s trading volume remained robust, with investors actively buying into tech stocks while keeping a cautious stance on broader sectors such as manufacturing and shipping, which had a limited role in the overnight U.S. gains.

Analysts from Seoul’s securities firms noted that though the pressure on the won might ease, the market remains sensitive to developments in U.S. political policy and global supply chain dynamics, both of which could impact the semiconductor sector. They highlighted the lock-step relationship between South Korea’s key technology companies and global market dynamics, pointing out that any shift in U.S. policy could directly affect foreign capital inflows in the country’s tech markets.

Across the world, major U.S. tech investors were monitoring the midterm election between 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. local time, as the policies the outcome might create could influence trade negotiations, technology regulation, and public investment in high‑tech economics.

South Korean corporate earnings reports have shown a mild improvement in profitability among semiconductor firms, with projected revenue expansions for the third quarter. This fiscal data has further reinforced investor confidence and arguably contributed to the aggressive trading activity seen in the early Hong Kong hours.

With the rise in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ, it remains to be seen how the stock market will respond following the release of U.S. election results on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the meantime, investors will likely be watching fortunes of dominant tech firms that dominate both domestic and global markets for their future resilience in the technology sector.
