In brief

Saudi Arabia’s Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen has finished 33 transport projects, covering 200 km of roads and upgrading Aden International Airport, to strengthen links between Yemen’s governorates. The initiatives, part of a larger 300‑project portfolio, are intended to improve mobility, trade, and access to healthcare, education and markets across the country.

Riyadh, November 6, 2026 – The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) announced that it has concluded 33 transport projects that connect Yemeni cities and governorates, easing the movement of people and goods and improving access to essential services.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the projects comprise about 200 kilometres of strategic roads – including the newly finished 90‑kilometre first stages of the Al‑Abr Road and the construction of an additional 40 kilometres of the third phase, bringing the total length of the route to 130 kilometres. The Al‑Abr Road is described as “a vital international link between the Kingdom and Yemen that connects several governorates and carries trade and travelers.”

Road Rehabilitation Across Governorates

Other internal roads have been rehabilitated in the governorates of Aden, Al‑Mahra and Socotra. The upgrades are said to improve traffic flow and road safety, and provide residents with better access to healthcare facilities, schools, markets and other economic hubs.

In the Socotra Archipelago, the program used stone paving that blends with the natural landscape to improve local transit and reduce flooding. The design was noted for taking care to respect the islands’ unique geography and environment.

Air transport benefits are also prominent. The SDRPY has rehabilitated the auxiliary runway, main passenger terminal, passenger parking, and gates of Aden International Airport, and built air cargo facilities. The first two phases of the airport’s renewal have strengthened operational readiness, emergency response and staff skills. The third phase, now underway, covers the main runway and upgrades air navigation and communication systems to meet international civil aviation standards. The goal is to increase the airport’s capacity for international and domestic flights and to reinforce Aden’s status as a key economic and urban hub.

These transport projects are part of the larger portfolio of 300 development projects and initiatives undertaken by SDRPY since 2018 across 16 Yemeni governorates in eight sectors, including education, health, water, energy, transport, agriculture and fisheries, and government capacity building.

Officials say the improved connectivity will stimulate trade and economic activity, enable faster movement of goods, and provide residents with better access to healthcare, education and markets. The projects are expected to enhance Yemen’s overall transportation network, logistics, and economic resilience.
