In brief

Over 122,000 residents have been displaced in Malaysia due to unprecedented flooding with an ongoing risk as heavy rains continue. Emergency services are in full force with shelters established, while neighboring Thailand faces similar challenges.

The recent onslaught of heavy rainfall in Malaysia has resulted in catastrophic flooding that has forced more than 122,000 individuals to evacuate their homes. Disaster agency officials report that at least three individuals have lost their lives, and there are concerns that the casualty number may rise if storms persist. With rainfall warnings still in effect, emergency services have mobilized thousands of personnel to assist in rescue operations for those stranded, while numerous emergency shelters have been set up across the affected regions.Footage circulating on social media depicts the extent of the devastation, showcasing submerged vehicles and homes, as well as residents navigating waist-deep waters. The flooding predominantly impacts the northeastern region of Kelantan, which shares a border with Thailand, and reports indicate that approximately 63% of the evacuees come from this state alone. This recent disaster has surpassed the displacement numbers recorded in the catastrophic floods of 2014, prompting the National Disaster Management Agency to activate 679 emergency shelters for those impacted.Additionally, states including Terengganu, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, and Perak have also felt the brunt of the flooding. Provisions for disaster management have been dispatched to the state governments of Terengganu and Kelantan, with the Prime Minister directing his cabinet members to remain available and focus on addressing the disaster. In nearby Thailand, six provinces have declared a disaster state due to flooding affecting over 240,000 households, leading to the deployment of the military to assist with rescues. As Malaysia's monsoon season commences this November, severe flooding has become an unfortunate yet common occurrence. The nation experienced some of its worst floods in decades in 2021, which resulted in at least 14 fatalities.
