In brief

Hania Zataari's pioneering 'aidbot' has mobilized essential resources for thousands of displaced people in Lebanon, showcasing a remarkable fusion of technology and humanitarian aid amid a devastating crisis.

In the midst of a tumultuous conflict affecting numerous families in Lebanon, mechanical engineer Hania Zataari has leveraged her expertise to create a transformative solution. This past autumn, as war intensified, Hania devised a WhatsApp chatbot known as the "aidbot" to facilitate access to crucial aid for those displaced by violence. Residing in Sidon, South Lebanon, she reflects on the challenges faced by her community: "They lost their houses, their savings, their work, everything they had built."The recent escalation of conflict, marked by heavy Israeli airstrikes against Hezbollah strongholds, has plunged the nation into one of its deadliest crises in years. Reports indicate that on a single day, at least 492 lives were lost, prompting a mass exodus to Sidon, where families sought shelter in schools, public buildings, and available homes. To effectively serve those in need, particularly individuals not receiving government support, Hania tailored her chatbot to collect essential data regarding the types of aid requested. By linking to WhatsApp, the aidbot engages users in simple dialogue to gather details about their needs and coordinates assistance through a behind-the-scenes Google spreadsheet managed by Hania and a dedicated group of volunteers.Utilizing her free time to develop the bot using the platform Callbell.eu, which businesses commonly utilize for customer interactions, Hania has significantly streamlined the aid distribution process. “I'm not really interested in knowing their names. I just need to know where they are so I can manage the delivery,” she emphasizes, highlighting the urgency of the situation.Donations from Lebanese expatriates fund the ongoing initiative, with Hania maintaining transparency through a publicly accessible dashboard that tracks expenditures and aid distribution. Thus far, her efforts have yielded impressive results, including the delivery of 78 food parcels and nearly 900 mattresses to families across Lebanon. As the humanitarian crisis affects many, families like that of Khaldoun Abbas have been directly impacted. Khaldoun, a father of three, described how he and his extended family, totaling 17 individuals, found temporary refuge in Sidon after their home was targeted in an Israeli strike. Desperate for assistance, they accessed aid through the chatbot for necessary items like mattresses and blankets.Despite efforts to aid those displaced, significant challenges persist. The ongoing hostilities, coupled with Lebanon's straining economy, create hurdles in meeting rising demands for humanitarian assistance. Bilal Merie, a volunteer with Hania, notes the compound difficulties they face due to the overwhelming need amid a constricting supply chain.International NGOs report that funding shortages hinder their ability to fulfill needs in the ever-evolving crisis. UNICEF Lebanon, for example, has only secured a fraction of the funding required to assist affected families. While Hania's aidbot introduces a novel approach to addressing immediate needs, experts like John Bryant recognize the limitations of technology in humanitarian settings. He asserts the importance of localized solutions that consider cultural nuances and community dynamics. Though the aidbot alone cannot remedy all of Lebanon’s challenges, it has certainly alleviated some burdens for families navigating the arduous landscape created by war and economic distress. As these innovative efforts continue to unfold, they stand as a testament to the potential of technology in the humanitarian sector, demonstrating how localized initiatives can indeed make a significant impact in the lives of those most in need.
