In brief

Ilulissat, Greenland’s third‑largest town, began operations on Thursday, featuring a 2,200‑metre runway that can accommodate large passenger aircraft. Approved by Danish aviation authorities, the airport will offer direct flights from Copenhagen and expand to full operations by summer 2027 as part of a wider three‑airport development program.

A new international airport opened Thursday in Ilulissat, western Greenland, marking a milestone for the town’s transport links and tourism potential. The facility boasts a 2,200‑metre runway capable of handling large passenger aircraft, enabling direct international connections to the area.

Greenland Airports, the operator, said the airport received final approval from the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority overnight after months of inspections and testing, including a test flight. The approval cleared the site for commercial use.

To launch the new route, a Air Greenland Airbus A330neo arrived from Copenhagen on Thursday afternoon, marking the first direct flight between the two cities. The chartered jet was part of the inaugural service and demonstrated the new runway’s capacity for large aircraft.

Operational Plans and Future Growth

Regular winter services will launch in November, initially operated by Jettime using a Boeing 737‑800. Flights will run primarily once a week on Wednesdays, with additional Monday departures during selected periods. Operations are planned to expand gradually, with the airport aiming for full service by the summer 2027 season.

The Ilulissat airport is the third project in a three‑airport development program that began with an opening in Nuuk in November 2024 and continued with Qaqortoq in April 2026. The programme seeks to improve transport links, boost tourism, and support regional commerce across Greenland.

Greenland Airports said the new facilities will open opportunities for tourism, cargo, and regional business. Ilulissat is renowned for its towering icebergs and the nearby Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts visitors worldwide.

Local residents and businesses anticipate that the airport will make the region more accessible, encourage greater visitor numbers, and create new economic activities. Improved flight connectivity to Copenhagen and other international hubs could also attract foreign investment and enhance trade possibilities for northern Greenland.

While the airport’s first phase focuses on aviation infrastructure, the broader development plan includes projects to streamline ground transport, upgrade facilities for cargo handling, and establish a network of regional airports to support the growing needs of Greenland’s communities.

As the new terminal becomes fully operational, Ilulissat seeks to position itself as a gateway for visitors to the Arctic’s natural wonders. The airport’s opening marks a significant step toward integrating Greenland’s communities with global travel and commerce.
