In brief

The court found that Chiloba's roommate, Jackton Odhiambo, had planned and executed the murder, yet motives remain unclear. The case has drawn international attention, emphasizing the need for better protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in Kenya.

In a significant development regarding the tragic murder of a Kenyan gay rights activist, a high court has convicted Jackton Odhiambo, the deceased's roommate, for the crime. Edwin Chiloba’s body was shockingly discovered stuffed in a metal box by the roadside in Uasin Gishu County in January 2023, an incident that deeply disturbed the nation's LGBTQ+ community and ignited calls for better safeguarding of their rights. The court proceedings culminated in a verdict this Wednesday, almost two years after the heinous act. Justice Reuben Nyambati Nyakundi, presiding over the Eldoret High Court, determined that Odhiambo had meticulously planned the murder. Eyewitnesses discarded claims of any dispute leading up to the incident, as the two were last seen descending the stairs of their shared residence after returning from an outing. Following their return, cries were reportedly heard from their apartment, which soon faded away, raising suspicions of foul play. The court's examination revealed DNA evidence indicating that Odhiambo had engaged in sexual intercourse with Chiloba before committing the murder, suggesting a complex and tragic dynamic. However, the judge highlighted that the investigation failed to uncover a clear motive behind the violent crime. "I embarked on an exploration, yet I could not unearth the reason for terminating the life of your dear friend," Justice Nyakundi noted, leaving many questions unanswered. As the case continues to resonate within and beyond Kenya, it underscores the urgent need for heightened protection measures for the vulnerable LGBTQ+ community amidst a climate of fear and violence.
