In brief
Bolsonaro faces a challenging recovery after recent surgery while preparing for serious legal charges stemming from his presidency.
The health situation of Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, aged 70, has taken a turn for the worse following intestinal surgery conducted earlier this month, according to his healthcare team. Currently in intensive care, Bolsonaro will undergo additional testing to assess his condition's progress. On Wednesday, a court official visited the hospital to deliver a summons requiring Bolsonaro to submit his initial defense against accusations of orchestrating a right-wing coup attempt after his defeat in the 2022 presidential race to leftist President Lula da Silva. Video footage captured Bolsonaro's furious reaction to the summons, which allotted him just five days to respond. The coup allegations stem from events where Bolsonaro's supporters allegedly stormed government buildings. Investigations have unveiled claims that Bolsonaro engaged in private discussions concerning coup strategies, including talks with military officials, to retain his hold on power. Prior to his recent surgery, Bolsonaro's health issues began after he suffered a stabbing incident during the 2018 election campaign in Minas Gerais, resulting in severe injuries that necessitated emergency surgery to save his life. He lost nearly 40% of his blood during the attack, and the assailant was later deemed mentally unfit for trial.Bolsonaro has consistently rejected the coup allegations, stating they are part of a politically motivated witch-hunt against him. Notably, just one day before the summons was delivered, he hosted a live YouTube session from his hospital bed with three of his sons, despite medical advice against having visitors. This livestream was used by the Brazilian Supreme Court to justify his capacity to be summoned for legal proceedings. While Bolsonaro has aspirations to return to political life by running for president again in 2026, he currently faces a ban on candidacy and could endure up to 40 years in prison if convicted of the coup-related charges.
