In the Khulais Governorate of Saudi Arabia, a tree‑planting event marked a quiet but tangible step toward greening the region. About 100 members of the Filipino community, led by Consul General Rommel Romato, gathered at a local park in Khulais to plant saplings in the National Greening Season. The event, organized by the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah, was a community‑driven effort to add green space and protect the environment.
The National Greening Season is part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing green push under the Saudi Green Initiative, which seeks to expand vegetation cover and rehabilitate degraded land across the Kingdom. Officials aim to transform open spaces into forests and parks, and they encourage citizens and residents to take part in local projects. The tree‑planting session in Khulais followed a series of similar campaigns that have taken place in other governorates since the season began.
During the day, volunteers dug shallow holes and set saplings in a firm mixture of compost and local soil. Each sapling was tagged with its planting date and species information to keep track of future growth. The Philippines’ Consular staff helped organize the containment of the saplings, ensuring that the young trees would have room to mature. Participants shared stories of homeland gardens and expressed pride in contributing to a global green movement.
Consul General Rommel Romato said the event would strengthen ties between the Filipino diaspora and their host country while aligning with shared environmental goals. The Consulate has continued to support community outreach by providing resources and mentorship for sustainability initiatives in the region, an approach that mirrors its broader mission of civic engagement abroad.
Environmental specialists from the Ministry of Environment and Water noted that the ghandibang parks of Khulais would benefit considerably from added canopy cover, reducing heat, improving air quality, and providing habitats for local birds. They also highlighted that such volunteer campaigns can offset carbon emissions generated by industrial and transportation activities in the Governorate, contributing to the Kingdom’s carbon neutrality targets.
The collaboration between the Philippine Consulate and local Saudi authorities demonstrates a reciprocal commitment to green development. While Filipino volunteers continue to plant seeds and roots, the Kingdom’s national program offers support and monitoring to ensure long‑term success. As Saudi Arabia pushes forward with its green initiatives, the small act of planting a sapling in Khulais stands as a symbol of collective stewardship and hopeful future.
