Police in Mumbai have detained a suspect in connection with the knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, according to various media reports. The actor was stabbed during an altercation at his residence on Thursday morning but has since undergone surgery and is now considered out of danger, as confirmed by medical professionals.
The incident occurred in Khan's upscale Bandra neighborhood, during what preliminary investigations suggest might have attempted theft. Authorities have secured CCTV footage from the actor's home, though it remains unclear whether the arrested individual is the intruder.
A nurse employed at Khan's home provided a statement to law enforcement that sheds light on the events of that fateful night. Eliyama Philip, who assists Khan's son, recounted encountering the shadow of a man while in the child's room. The intruder, armed with a wooden object and a knife, threatened her and the nanny, demanding 10 million rupees (around $115,477).
Chaos ensued as the attacker confronted Khan, who, upon hearing the commotion, rushed to the scene with his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor. In the ensuing struggle, Khan sustained multiple injuries, including a wound on his neck. Dr. Nitin Dange, from Lilavati Hospital where Khan is receiving treatment, stated that he arrived in critical condition, with a knife fragment embedded in his spine. Fortunately, timely intervention from the medical team effectively mitigated the risk of severe spinal injury.
As of now, Khan has shown signs of recovery and was able to walk under supervision. Doctors have advised him to limit his movements for at least a week while he recuperates.
Dixit Gadam, Deputy Commissioner of Mumbai Police, noted that while the weapon used in the attack remains missing, they are investigating how the suspect managed to enter the premises. Reports indicate that he utilized a fire escape ladder to access the actor's apartment, raising questions about how he entered.
At 54 years old, Saif Ali Khan is a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, known for his roles in numerous films and television series over his prolific career. He is celebrated for his comedic talent and received acclaim for his portrayal of the villain in the 2006 film Omkara. In 2010, he was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award. Khan comes from a distinguished family, being the son of ex-cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore.
