The story of French serial killer Charles Sobhraj, portrayed in the BBC-Netflix drama 'The Serpent', has resonated widely. However, the lesser-known tale of Indian police officer Madhukar Zende, who apprehended the notorious killer not once but twice, is now captivating audiences in a new Netflix film.

'Inspector Zende' features Bollywood star Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role, with Jim Sarbh taking on the role of the reimagined Sobhraj, named Carl Bhojraj in the film. Set over three weeks in 1986, the film unfolds the dramatic interactions between the cop and the killer.

On March 16, 1986, Sobhraj executed a cunning escape from Delhi's Tihar jail, where he had served a 12-year sentence for murdering a French tourist. Claiming it was his birthday, he drugged the guards and inmates with sweet treats that led to his escape.

Inspector Zende, having previously arrested Sobhraj in 1971, was called back to duty shortly after the escape as the authorities recognized his capability to confront such a dangerous criminal again. The film's release has rekindled interest in Zende's legacy as viewers reconnect with his story.

At 88, Zende recalls the excitement of chasing Sobhraj through bars and beaches, culminating in the detective's sensational capture at an O'Coqueiro restaurant in Goa. His recognition soared following this arrest, transforming him into a celebrated hero.

As the film highlights the tension and thrill of the chase, it also invites viewers into the world of Mumbai's crime scene and the costs of heroism. Zende's story adds a personal touch to the broader narrative of crime and justice in India, emphasizing the subtle power of remembering forgotten heroes.

Despite Sobhraj's claims of using the escape to prolong his sentence and avoid extradition, Zende is unperturbed by his former adversary's freedom, expressing indifference to Sobhraj's current status at 81 years old.
