In brief

Michael Grimm, once a representative of Staten Island and Brooklyn, is currently battling paralysis following a severe horse riding accident during a polo match.

In September, former US congressman Michael Grimm was tragically paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament. His friend, former New York City council member Vincent Ignizio, shared with the Associated Press that the "tragic accident" has led Grimm to receive extensive medical treatment, and a fundraising page has been established to assist with costs. Grimm, who is 54 years old, had a diverse background as a marine and FBI agent. He served in the House of Representatives, representing Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, until he resigned months before his conviction for tax evasion in 2015. The fundraising page emphasizes the miraculous nature of Grimm's survival, stating, "Through the grace of God and the amazing medical teams who have helped him," while also highlighting the enormous expenses—potentially reaching "millions of dollars"—needed for his treatment aimed at regaining mobility.Currently receiving care at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, a facility known for treating high-profile patients, including the late actor Christopher Reeve after his own accident, Grimm's ultimate ambition is to walk again. Ignizio remarked, "His ultimate goal is to get himself to walk again."In response to the incident, New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences, stating that his "thoughts and prayers" are with Grimm and that he felt "deeply saddened" by the accident. As the nation celebrates Veterans Day, Adams recognized Grimm's service as a Marine veteran, wishing him a full and speedy recovery. Michael Grimm was initially elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 but faced serious legal challenges following a two-year investigation into his financial conduct. In 2014, he was accused of under-reporting wages and revenue to evade various taxes and was sentenced to eight months in prison the following year.
