In brief
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a nonprofit organization known for its bipartisan efforts in promoting democracy worldwide, has initiated legal action against the U.S. government due to a halt in $239 million in congressional appropriations. The lawsuit, filed in the Federal District Court in Washington, D.C., is aimed at compelling the State Department to release funds that the NED argues are not classified as foreign aid and should therefore not be managed by executive branch entities. This funding freeze, tied to an executive order by President Trump, has forced the organization to place approximately 75% of its workforce on unpaid leave and has affected around 1,200 grant recipients who have not received financial support since late January. NED chairman and former Illinois congressman Peter Roskam expressed hope that the inaction might be an oversight rather than a deliberate policy decision.
