The Merseyside Police reported that on Monday evening, a driver severally injured nearly 50 individuals, including four children, when a car struck a jubilant crowd celebrating Liverpool F.C.’s Premier League victory during a parade attended by an estimated hundreds of thousands.

Eyewitness accounts detail the chaos as the vehicle collided with parade-goers on Water Street in Liverpool city center around 6 p.m. Local authorities swiftly responded following distress calls. Bystander videos depict a dark vehicle with a damaged rear window maneuvering into the crowd, leading to numerous casualties on the ground. Witnesses rushed to provide aid to those affected, some attempting to halt the driver, who later sped away from the scene.

Merseyside Police have indicated that this unsettling event appears to be an isolated incident and is not currently classified as an act of terrorism. A 53-year-old local man has been arrested and is believed to be behind the wheel during the incident, as confirmed by Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims during a press conference.

Emergency services reported that, in total, 47 individuals suffered injuries, with 27 transported to hospitals due to varying degrees of harm. Among them were two individuals, including one child, classified with serious injuries. An ambulance paramedic was also struck but fortunately did not sustain critical injuries in the melee. Authorities noted that a few attendees were briefly trapped beneath the vehicle.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his dismay regarding the event on social media, stating, “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling, and my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.” Meanwhile, Liverpool F.C. assured fans that they remain in close contact with police and pledge their support for emergency services addressing the aftermath of this distressing incident.
