Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following up on a 'domestic-related' investigation, authorities have reported.

Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris stated that the shooter was fatally shot by law enforcement.

The tragic event occurred shortly after 14:00 local time (18:00 GMT), with images depicting an officer being airlifted to a medical facility.

In response to the shooting, a nearby school district in Spring Grove, a small town of approximately 2,500 residents, enacted a temporary shelter-in-place order, although it was later confirmed that the school had not been directly impacted.

Official communications emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public following the incident, which took place in a rural region of York County in North Codorus Township—approximately 100 miles (160 km) west of Philadelphia.

Law enforcement was present for an investigation initiated the day prior, while details surrounding the shooting remain limited as the investigation is still active, according to Commissioner Paris.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro arrived at the scene Wednesday afternoon to meet with the families of the slain officers, expressing deep condolences for what he termed the loss of 'three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country.'

Governor Shapiro condemned the violence, stating, 'This kind of violence is not OK, we need to do better as a society.' He has since ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-mast in honor of the deceased officers.

The FBI Director Kash Patel has confirmed that agents were on-site assisting local and state law enforcement. 'Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community,' Patel remarked in an official statement.
