In brief

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a health crisis as an unidentified disease has led to at least 79 deaths, primarily among youth, with over 300 cases reported. Medical teams are investigating the illness, which displays flu-like symptoms, amidst a backdrop of limited medical resources.

An unknown disease has swept through portions of southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo, leading to the deaths of at least 79 individuals, as confirmed by the country's health ministry. Most of the deceased are teenagers, aged 15 to 18, sparking concern over the alarming rise in infections, which has surpassed 300. Patients are presenting with a range of symptoms such as fever, headaches, runny noses, coughs, respiratory difficulties, and even cases of anaemia. In response to this distressing outbreak, health authorities have deployed emergency response teams to Kwango Province, particularly in the Panzi health zone—the epicenter of the outbreak. Cephorien Manzanza, a civil society leader in the area, expressed his anxiety to the Reuters news agency, highlighting the rural setting's lack of resources, which complicates access to necessary medicines.A representative from the World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa reported efforts underway to gather samples for laboratory analysis in this remote region. Authorities are urging the local population to remain calm and exercise vigilance, advising them on hygiene practices including handwashing, avoiding crowded gatherings, and refraining from physical contact with deceased individuals without healthcare supervision.Local politicians have further indicated that the situation is critical, citing that nearly 67 individuals became ill and died between November 10 and November 26 alone. The hospital in Panzi is reported to be struggling with a shortage of medications to adequately address this epidemic and urgently requires assistance. Additionally, the Democratic Republic of Congo is contending with a recent surge of mpox cases, with around 14,500 infections documented from January to July this year, while historically grappling with outbreaks of Ebola.
