In brief

The artisanal cheese community is in shock after the disappearance of a large shipment worth nearly $400,000.

The UK cheese industry is grappling with a shocking heist that could be described as “the grate cheese robbery," when 22 metric tons of rare Cheddar, valued at approximately £300,000 ($390,000), vanished without a trace. The theft represents one of the most significant cons the artisanal cheese producers have faced in decades. Patrick Holden, the owner of a Welsh dairy farm that contributed to the missing Cheddar, expressed his disbelief: “We never imagined that this sort of thing would happen. Of course, bad debts exist, but outright theft isn't something we see in our industry.”This bizarre sequence of events began in July when Neal’s Yard Dairy, a renowned cheese retail outlet in London, received a substantial order from what seemed to be a reputable wholesale distributor linked to a major French retailer. To fulfill this large request, Neal’s Yard enlisted the help of Mr. Holden’s farm, along with two other cheese makers—Westcombe Dairy and Trethowan Brothers. The size of the order excited the producers, especially the idea of a huge French supermarket selling British Cheddar.Reflecting on the situation, Mr. Holden shared, “We were proudly going around saying: ‘Guess what, a French supermarket is buying our cheese.’” The wooden crates filled with the prized Cheddar, once a symbol of pride and quality, have turned into an emblem of a clever ruse by scammers targeting artisanal producers. As the affected companies await answers, the tight-knit cheese community knows that trust, their foundation, has now been breached.
