In brief

In Delhi, Indian security forces surrounded the site of a planned opposition march demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over voter list revisions. The protest, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, is expected to draw hundreds of thousands, with authorities warning of traffic diversions and deploying riot‐control vehicles. Analysts see the demonstrations as the toughest challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014, though the next general election will not be held until 2029.

Security personnel carrying batons and shields and accompanied by riot control vehicles surrounded the site of a planned opposition protest in New Delhi on Sunday, as officials prepared for a march that will demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of voter lists.

Police stationed at the central intersection where the rally will be held issued warnings that large crowds would arrive and that traffic diversions would be implemented as necessary, according to a senior traffic police officer. The move came as the opposition parties, student organisations and the youth‑led Cockroach Janta Party have staged near‑daily demonstrations since last month demanding the election chief step down.

The protest will be led by Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi and is expected to mobilise hundreds of thousands of participants. Analysts say the youth protests and growing opposition support pose the worst crisis faced by Narendra Modi since he took office in 2014, despite the government remaining stable and the next general election not due until 2029.

Opposition parties predict a nearly 1.5 km march from central Delhi to the Ramlila Maidan, the designated site for the rally. Visuals from the news agency ANI showed riot control vehicles and dozens of security personnel armed with batons and shields encircling the venue, as announcements were made to ensure smooth traffic flow and cooperation with police officials.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has denied that any party is being favoured by the revisions. The Election Commission said voters wrongly deleted can re‑enrol, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused rivals of attempting to undermine democratic processes.

Reports from the Delhi Traffic Police noted that “a large gathering” was expected at the venue and that “traffic regulations and diversions would be implemented as required.” The police added that proper arrangements have been ensured at the venue and along the march route.

No violence has yet been reported. The police force has deployed riot control units and prepared baton‑carrying officers to maintain order during the rally.

Rahul Gandhi is expected to lead the march, which will call for the resignation of the election chief in protest over perceived partisan manipulation of the electoral roll. The protest, if it draws the predicted number of participants, will offer a significant challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2029 general elections.

Opposition parties argue that the revisions in the voter list favour the BJP. They contend that the changes unfairly remove eligible voters and alter the balance of political power.

The Election Commission maintains that the revisions are routine updates intended to remove duplicate entries and improve accuracy. It has stated that any voter removed can re‑enrol, and it denies any partisan advantage.

During an earlier press briefing, a senior police officer said that the security arrangements included deploying riot control vehicles and officers armed with batons and shields. He called the measures necessary to curb any potential disorder.

There has been no official statement from the BJP regarding the protest’s security arrangements. The party has described the opposition’s demands as attempts to challenge a democratic process.

Officials reiterated that any large gathering would be managed through traffic diversions and strict crowd control. The event centre’s location near a key traffic artery required additional planning.

Security officials highlighted that the march route will pass through several busy markets and commercial districts, necessitating careful coordination with local authorities to minimise disruptions.

Because the protest centre lies in a densely populated area, police will round the perimeter with armed officers to prevent potential clashes.

The opposition calls for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, stating that his recent actions have compromised election integrity. Supporters of the protest emphasize the significance of a transparent electoral roll.

In summary, Delhi’s security forces are actively managing the preparation for a sizeable opposition march led by Rahul Gandhi, which seeks to press for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over voter list revision controversies. The event will test law‑enforcement capacity and civic participation ahead of India’s next general election in 2029.
