In brief

In Berlin, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that Germany can no longer supply Ukraine with Patriot air‑defence systems because it would create critical gaps in German forces. He criticised the relatively low contribution from other partners and called for stronger assistance at the Ukraine Contact Group meeting in mid‑November. Pistorius also warned that ending aid could trigger a mass influx of Ukrainian refugees into Central and Western Europe and dismissed near‑term ceasefire prospects.

Berlin, Nov. 7 – German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that further delivery of Patriot air‑defence systems to Ukraine is impossible because it would leave critical gaps in Germany’s own defence network. The minister explained that Germany had already supplied several Patriot batteries and a large number of guided missiles but that it could no longer replace what it had handed over.

"Supplies, particularly of Patriot systems, are proving difficult. Germany has already delivered several systems and a large number of guided missiles for them. We cannot do any more at this point. Anything we hand over now cannot be replaced for some time, and this would create gaps in our [defenses] that we cannot afford to allow," Pistorius told the Funke media group.

He added that other nations had contributed significantly less and called on them to step up their support. "We must have a very serious discussion about this at the next meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group in mid‑November," he said. Pistorius stressed that the German government would not extend aid beyond the limits already set.

In addition to the refusal of further Patriot deliveries, Pistorius warned that ending aid to Kyiv, a position advanced by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, would lead to a massive influx of Ukrainian refugees into Central and Western European countries. He also dismissed the prospect of a near‑term ceasefire in Ukraine.

Germany remains Ukraine’s largest donor, having supplied about 43.3 billion euros in humanitarian aid and 57.6 billion euros in military assistance since the invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022. The German government claims that the refusal of additional Patriot systems is a necessary measure to protect its own national security while continuing to support Kyiv in other ways.

Russian officials have repeatedly stated that arms deliveries to the Kiev regime only prolong the conflict, a view that underscores the strategic debate about how best to support Ukraine while safeguarding European security.
