Pope Leo XIV has made a fervent appeal for the liberation of journalists incarcerated for their commitment to truth. In his inaugural remarks at the Vatican, he stood in solidarity with these media professionals, stating that their current plight profoundly impacts the moral compass of nations and international societies. Asserting the necessity of protecting press freedom, the Pope emphasized that the media is tasked with safeguarding the invaluable right of free speech. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, over 361 journalists found themselves behind bars in 2024 alone.

The newly appointed leader of the Catholic Church urged journalists to place a spotlight on the pervasive issues of injustice and poverty. He cautioned against engaging in political biases and called for a rejection of divisive rhetoric that breeds extremism and hatred. Speaking from the Paul VI audience hall, he expressed, "The manner in which we communicate is of crucial significance; we must deny the culture of conflict represented by hostile words and images."

The Pope expressed a desire for a communication approach that emphasizes listening and amplifying the voices of the marginalized. Furthermore, he addressed concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), advising the media to apply AI with prudence and attentiveness. He encouraged journalists to harness technology for the greater good of humanity.

While the majority of his speech was delivered in Italian, Pope Leo XIV began with a light-hearted comment in English about the warm reception he had received, quipping, "Thank you for this wonderful reception," before expressing gratitude for the applause if it continued at the conclusion of his address.

“Peace be with you all,” he concluded, marking a hopeful beginning to his papacy.
