Former First Lady Melania Trump has revealed that she has an active communication line with Russian President Vladimir Putin pertaining to the plight of children affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
On Friday, she announced that as a result of this 'open channel,' there have been significant developments in reuniting displaced Ukrainian children with their families. This announcement followed her 'peace letter' to Putin, delivered during his recent trip to Alaska in August.
Sections of the letter, shared by President Donald Trump on social media, urged Putin to prioritize the protection of children, asserting that such actions would benefit humanity as a whole.
During her address at the White House, Mrs. Trump stated, 'Eight children have been rejoined with their families in the past 24 hours,' noting the turmoil these children have faced due to the ongoing conflict.
In her remarks, she explained that among those reunited were three children who had been displaced to Russia amid frontline fighting. Additionally, one young girl was brought back from Ukraine to Russia. The reunification efforts were coordinated between Ukrainian and Russian authorities.
Mrs. Trump expressed that she received a comprehensive report detailing the circumstances of the children involved, and the U.S. government confirmed the reunifications. She emphasized her learning journey regarding this issue since her initial correspondence with Putin.
Her letter poignantly conveyed a universal desire among children, stating: 'Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart... They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger.'
This development marks a notable milestone in her advocacy work aimed at improving the lives of children, which she has championed during her time in the White House through initiatives like BE BEST.
Earlier this year, she also advocated for legislative measures, such as the Take It Down Act, aimed at combating revenge porn, underscoring her commitment to child protection.
