In brief

The trial of medical professionals involved in the care of Diego Maradona, the legendary Argentine footballer, has commenced, spotlighting claims of negligence in his treatment before his untimely death.

The trial against the medical team that treated Diego Maradona, the revered Argentine football star, has commenced in Buenos Aires. Maradona passed away from a heart attack in November 2020 at the age of 60, while recovering from surgery to remove a brain blood clot earlier that month. Prosecutors assert that Maradona's death was preventable, blaming the healthcare personnel for negligent actions leading up to his passing. On the other hand, the defense argues that Maradona declined further medical intervention and that his stay in the hospital was insufficient due to his own choices regarding treatment. If found guilty, the accused could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years for alleged homicide with possible intent. In the opening arguments, prosecutor Patricio Ferrari stated that the prosecution intends to present "solid" evidence showing that none of the medical team adequately fulfilled their responsibilities during Maradona's final moments. Ferrari emphasized that Maradona, his family, and the people of Argentina deserve justice. The case has been categorized as culpable homicide, akin to involuntary manslaughter, suggesting the accused were aware of Maradona's deteriorating health yet failed to act appropriately. Among those on trial are a neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, medical coordinator, nursing coordinator, physician, and night nurse. The night nurse has previously indicated awareness of "warning signs" but followed directives to refrain from waking Maradona. With over 100 witnesses slated to testify, the trial is anticipated to extend until July. Fans gathered outside the courthouse holding banners, including one reading "Justice for God," reflecting the deep affection the public holds for Maradona, who captained Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986. His passing elicited national mourning, with tens of thousands lining up to pay their respects at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires.
