Former bodyguard to Sean "Diddy" Combs, Joseph Sherman, has initiated legal action against Thalia Graves and her attorney, Gloria Allred, in a suit alleging defamation and emotional distress. The complaint was filed on Friday in the Southern District of New York, as a counter-response to a lawsuit lodged by Graves and Allred on September 24, 2024, in which Sherman was accused along with Combs. Sherman claims Graves sought to blackmail him, providing evidence in the form of text messages as part of his allegations.
Sherman's lawsuit points out that he ceased his employment with Combs in 1999 and asserts that he had no involvement in the events described by Graves, who alleges a rape incident involving both Sherman and Combs in 2001. In fact, Sherman states he has never met Graves. His filing includes claims of attempted coercion, where Graves purportedly solicited his cooperation against Combs in exchange for legal protection.
Critics are raising questions about Gloria Allred's conduct, suggesting a pattern of misconduct targeted at undermining Combs' accusers. Notably, Allred and her daughter Lisa Bloom have faced scrutiny in various high-profile cases. The unique situation has also highlighted that Allred is the only plaintiff attorney presently facing a countersuit from those she has targeted legally.
Concerns extend to Allred's association with attorney Mark Geragos and the implications of conflicts of interest, as both lawyers have been linked to past cases filled with allegations of impropriety. Observers have indicated a troubling connection between Allred and Anthony Pellicano, a notorious private investigator with a criminal history of blackmail and witness tampering.
Sherman’s lawsuit has rekindled discussions about Allred’s legal tactics. The controversial attorney has previously faced multiple investigations for alleged misconduct and had connections to various legal scandals, including allegations of racketeering. Sherman’s attorney, Darnell D. Crosland, emphasized the need to recognize and address the repercussions of false accusations not just on the accused men, but on the integrity of genuine victims as well.
As this lawsuit progresses, the unfolding drama raises critical questions about the ethics and intentions behind notable legal professionals involved in high stakes cases, as well as their broader impact on the perception of the Me Too movement. Whether Sherman’s claims will affect the narrative surrounding other allegations against Diddy remains to be seen, but it appears to have ignited a renewed discourse about accountability and responsibility among those in legal practice.
