In brief
Brunei's Tourism Development Department announced plans to welcome ten additional international cruise ships by 2026, following the recent arrival of the MV Dream. The strategy is part of preparations for Visit Brunei Year 2027 and seeks to enhance local economic participation through cruise tourism.
In the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei’s tourism authorities announced a plan that will see ten more international cruise ships call at the country’s ports by the end of 2026. According to a statement from Xinhua, the country is building on the recent arrival of the cruise ship MV Dream to diversify its visitor mix and tap new markets.
Xinhua reported that the Brunei Tourism Development Department “expects 10 international cruise ship calls before the end of 2026.” The department said that the MV Dream’s visit was a test run for larger, regular arrivals and that the ship’s itinerary is expected to draw a wider range of travelers to the small Southeast Asian nation.
The announcement frames the new influx of ships as a way to stimulate tourism development and increase local economic participation. By reducing travel costs and offering extended stays, **Xinhua** suggests that cruise visitors can spend more money on local purchases, cultural tours, and other services, which in turn supports small businesses and community projects.
Brunei is also preparing for Visit Brunei Year 2027, a national campaign aimed at attracting more international tourists. Xinhua stated that cruise ship calls present “further opportunities to strengthen the country’s position in the regional cruise tourism sector.” The Department’s initiative is intended to position Brunei alongside neighboring cruise hubs, thereby expanding its share of regional maritime visitor traffic.
Looking ahead, Brunei’s strategy hinges on the expectation that cruise traffic will grow consistently through 2026, thereby laying the groundwork for a sustained tourism impact into the 2027 event and beyond. By encouraging international cruise lines to schedule regular visits, the country hopes to create a stable stream of foreign visitors that will benefit the local economy and help strengthen its profile as a tourist destination.
