In brief

Despite a slight increase in sales, the company's bottom line took a hit, leading to concerns over its market dominance.

Tesla's financial health took a notable turn in 2024 as the electric vehicle market sees heightened rivalry from competitors in China, Europe, and the United States. The company, helmed by Elon Musk, disclosed a profit of $2.3 billion for the final quarter of 2024, down significantly from $7.9 billion during the same period in 2023. The previous year's numbers were supplemented by a one-time tax advantage worth $5.9 billion, which skews the comparison; stripped of this benefit, Tesla's operating profit declined by 23% in the last quarter.Although fourth-quarter sales saw a modest rise of 2%, totaling $25.7 billion as opposed to $25.2 billion a year earlier, overall profit for the year slumped to $7.1 billion from $15 billion previously. Sales for the entire year did increase to $97.7 billion from $96.8 billion in 2023, thanks in part to the growing demand for Tesla's energy storage products, which serve electric utilities, businesses, and residential solar panel systems. The company, however, continues to lean heavily on its Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV, which account for a large portion of its vehicle sales. In contrast, competitors are expanding their electric vehicle offerings, posing a threat to Tesla's market position.
