The German legal system is facing a shocking crisis as a palliative care doctor in Berlin has been charged with the murder of 15 patients and is believed to be involved in the suspicious deaths of an additional 75 individuals. The 40-year-old physician, whose identity remains confidential due to privacy laws, was arrested last year after suspicions arose regarding patient fatalities between 2021 and 2024.

According to prosecutors, the doctor allegedly administered powerful narcotics and muscle relaxants to his victims, effectively inducing death by halting their breathing. In a further disturbing twist, he is suspected of committing arson in some cases, igniting fires in the patients’ apartments to destroy evidence. There are even claims that he called emergency services in a bid to mislead investigators and mask his wrongdoing.

If convicted, the physician could be sentenced to life imprisonment, which under German law allows for potential parole after 15 years. Yet due to the nature of these crimes, authorities are considering a request for extended custody, which would keep the doctor detained beyond his sentence for public safety reasons.

Currently, he is being held at Moabit Prison in Berlin, following his initial arrest last August when the first allegations of murder emerged related to four of his patients. Continued investigations have unveiled further victims tied to this tragic saga, raising urgent questions about the safeguards against violence in healthcare settings.
