Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump this Sunday in Florida, as part of ongoing discussions to end Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The meeting aims to address a U.S.-backed 20-point peace plan and explore additional proposals for U.S. security assurances, amidst reports of slow but steady progress in negotiations between U.S. and Russian officials.

The Kremlin has indicated a commitment to negotiation, although there is uncertainty surrounding Zelensky’s proposal to withdraw troops from the contested eastern Donbas region in exchange for a Russian retreat.

In seeking security guarantees as part of a potential peace agreement, Zelensky has hinted at the establishment of a demilitarized zone in the Donbas, which remains under dispute between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Zelensky conveyed optimism after discussing new ideas for negotiations with Trump's key advisors during a phone call on Christmas Day. He expressed a sense of urgency, stating, We are not losing a single day as both parties strive to reach an agreement before the New Year.

The previous meeting between Zelensky and Trump occurred during a turbulent session at the White House in February, whereas their last encounter in October was notably more cordial.

Amidst these political developments, the conflict continues unabated, with recent reports highlighting ongoing fighting and air strikes, resulting in casualties, while efforts towards a comprehensive peace deal persist.
