In brief
Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, a celebrated Miss Grand International 2021, has been arrested for allegedly misleading consumers with counterfeit fiber gummies that promised nutritional benefits.
Vietnamese beauty queen Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, renowned for her title as Miss Grand International in 2021, finds herself at the center of a fraud investigation following her promotion of Kera Supergreens Gummies. These gummies, marketed as containing fiber equivalent to a plate of vegetables, drew scrutiny after product tests revealed they contained merely 16mg of fiber per gummy, far less than the claimed 200mg. The controversy began when a concerned consumer sent the product for lab testing, which unveiled the truth behind the misleading claims. Tien, along with fellow influencers Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc, collaborated on this product, claiming substantial health benefits that did not exist. The gummies were produced with subpar ingredients, and allegations surfaced that the packaging omitted critical information about fiber content and high levels of sorbitol, often used in laxatives. In March, Tien and her colleagues faced fines and publicly apologized for their actions, but the legal repercussions escalated when authorities arrested Linh, Muc, and other officials linked to their company in April for producing counterfeit goods. Following the investigation, Tien was arrested on Monday, exacerbating the scandal surrounding the sale of over 100,000 boxes of the gummies before production was halted. Following her victory in the Bangkok-based beauty contest, Tien gained immense popularity, becoming a highly sought-after celebrity for endorsements and television appearances while receiving accolades from government officials, including certificates of merit from the prime minister and the ruling Communist Party, making this scandal a significant blow to her public image and career.
