WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Park Police officer shot during what authorities called an ambush was released from the hospital Tuesday, according to a post from the Park Police on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The officer's identity remains undisclosed but was shot Monday evening while driving in an unmarked vehicle in a Washington neighborhood near the Maryland border. During a press briefing, Park Police Chief Scott Brecht stated that the officer was working on an investigation when two gunmen opened fire on him. Specifics of the investigation have not been disclosed by the chief.

The officer suffered a shoulder wound, revealed a law enforcement official who spoke anonymously.

The investigation is being conducted jointly by the Park Police and the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington. Chief Brecht mentioned that authorities are actively searching for two suspects involved in the shooting.

Jeffery Carroll, the interim police chief of Washington, indicated during the briefing that the officer was likely targeted, hinting that the gunmen may have been aware that he was a police officer.

Federal officials stated their involvement in assisting with the ongoing investigation.
