LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A UPS plane crashed on takeoff from the airport in Louisville, Kentucky, igniting a huge fire on the ground, officials said Tuesday. The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane crashed at about 5:15 p.m. It was taking off for Honolulu. The FAA reported that the plane was scheduled to fly to Honolulu after departing from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Police responded quickly to reports of the crash near Louisville International Airport. Injuries have been confirmed, according to a social media update from the Louisville Metro Police Department. Social media photos showed a large plume of black smoke rising into the sky. Louisville’s police department alerted the public on X about the fire and debris, urging people to stay clear of the area. Additionally, Louisville Metro Emergency Services extended a shelter-in-place order to all areas north of the airport up to the Ohio River. Video footage from local TV stations captured a large trail of flames and smoke as fire trucks worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft involved in the incident was manufactured in 1991. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear shared awareness of the reports via X, stating, 'First responders are onsite, and we will share more information as available.
