A tragic incident unfolded in New South Wales, Australia, where an underground explosion at the Endeavor mine led to the death of Ambrose Patrick McMullen, a 59-year-old Irish man from Cootehill, County Cavan. According to reports from RTÉ News, emergency services were called to the scene early on Tuesday, following the explosion that has left the mining community in shock.

McMullen was one of two fatalities caused by the explosion, while two other women in their 20s were rescued, with one sadly succumbing to injuries later. McMullen, known affectionately as Ambie, was described as a kind and friendly man who had excelled in sports during his youth. He had relocated to Australia in the mid-1980s and built a new life there, married with children.

Cobar Mayor Jarrod Marsden expressed his condolences, stating the incident was an absolutely tragic situation, highlighting the rarity of fatalities in Australian mines — the last notable death occurred in 2015. An investigation by the state’s workplace safety authority is underway, and a report will be prepared for the coroner to establish the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
