Tragic Avalanche Claims Life of Skier in French Alps
A large avalanche in the French Alps has resulted in the death of a skier, raising concerns about winter safety in the region.
On Tuesday afternoon, a "very large" avalanche near Mont Blanc led to the tragic death of a 55-year-old dual Brazilian-Portuguese national, confirmed local authorities. Rescuers located his body in the resort of Les Grands Montets, where the avalanche occurred shortly before 4:35 PM local time. Initially misidentified as British, the victim had been skiing in an off-piste area that was already under scrutiny due to extremely poor conditions. Ski patrol had aimed to close this section when the avalanche struck. Local rescue teams responded promptly, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials from the Haute-Savoie prefecture have issued a warning to skiers and hikers to prioritize safety as January brings significant avalanche risks to the area.
