Three hikers, including a 19-year-old who fell approximately 500 feet, have been found dead on Mt Baldy, a notorious peak in Southern California.
Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova was on a hike with a friend when the accident occurred on December 29. His companion was able to alert authorities after hiking to find cell reception.
In the subsequent search, authorities discovered two other deceased hikers whose identities and circumstances remain unclear. Rescue efforts were hampered due to strong winds, delaying the recovery work. Authorities have emphasized that the mountain can be treacherous and have urged hikers to stay away, especially in unpredictable winter conditions.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has reported numerous rescue operations from the mountain in recent years, highlighting the risks involved in climbing Mt Baldy.
In a heartfelt family statement, Casanova was described as an avid sailor and outdoorsman. The community mourns the loss and reflects on the dangers that Mt Baldy presents, especially during winter.
Despite the allure of its scenic views, Mt Baldy has gained a reputation as one of the deadliest peaks in the U.S., with over 14 fatalities since 2020 and more than 100 rescues.
With trails now closed until the new year due to safety concerns, authorities continue to stress the importance of caution for anyone considering hiking in the area.
